Mark Farrales fled to the United States with his family to seek political asylum after the life of Mark’s father, a prominent lawyer who spoke out against government corruption, was threatened by two gunshots to the head in 1990. Mark Farrales’ father, Jaime, had just announced a bid for congress during that time. Mark was only ten years old when he left the Philippines. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University and is now a Ph.D student in the University of California, San Diego. He was writing his dissertation on corruption reform. He is currently awaiting deportation in a Lancaster detention center.
